I’m thrilled to share some wonderful news! I’ve been invited to be part of a panel submission for the International Communication Association (ICA) Conference, which will take place in Cape Town in June 2026.
This invitation comes after I submitted my abstract on “10 Years of Netflix in South Africa”. For the upcoming conference, I’ve been asked to expand my research to explore Netflix in the Global South — a topic that deeply excites me. It’s an opportunity to look at how global streaming giants like Netflix shape stories, cultures, and perceptions beyond Western borders.
The proposed panel, titled “The Power of Difference: Rethinking Access, Equity & Inclusion,” will critically examine Netflix’s decade-long influence (2016–2026) as a case study for understanding transnational inequalities. Together, we’ll explore the balance between global content models and local representation, asking questions like:
- How are African and Global South stories told — and by whom?
- What happens when local narratives adapt to global markets?
- How do audiences respond to what they see on screen?
It’s an incredible honour to be part of this discussion alongside leading voices in media and communication. And it’s even more meaningful that this prestigious international conference will take place right here in South Africa — a perfect setting to explore how our stories travel across borders.
I can’t wait to develop my presentation further and share insights on how authentic storytelling and inclusive representation can reshape how the world sees — and hears — us.
Stay tuned as I continue this journey toward ICA 2026. The adventure has only just begun!
