Saturday evening marked the prestigious Forty Under 40 South Africa Awards, held in Johannesburg β a celebration that honours outstanding young leaders making an impact across a wide range of industries, from business and education to health, entertainment, and social impact.
Although I was unable to attend the ceremony in person (I was in George that same day, giving a motivational talk), I managed to catch snippets of the live-streamed event online. It started at 18h00 and went on until almost 23h00 β a truly grand affair filled with inspiring stories and remarkable achievers from across the country.
Then, later that night, I received a heartwarming message from a fellow nominee, Nelisa, also from the Eastern Cape:
βVicki!!!!! Congratulations lady!! Well done on the incredible achievement!! You ought to be so proud of yourself! I’m thrilled for you, well done! ππβ
And thatβs when I realised β I had won!
Originally, I had been nominated for the Entertainment & Music category. But to my surprise and delight, I was instead honoured with an Honorary Award for Disability Support β a recognition personally selected by the Chairperson of Forty Under 40 South Africa.
This award means so much to me. It acknowledges my ongoing work in disability advocacy, inclusive storytelling, and representation through film and media. Itβs a reminder that our stories β especially those that amplify Deaf and disabled voices β truly matter and continue to make a difference.
I canβt wait to receive my award and certificate in the mail, along with the official magazine featuring all the winners.
To everyone who has supported and believed in this journey β thank you. This is not just my win, but a win for every person who dares to dream differently, work boldly, and break barriers along the way. π
