Ons Klyntji | Magazine Submission

I’m really excited to share that I’ve just sent in an essay for possible publication in Ons Klyntji Zine, a well-loved South African arts and culture magazine.

This year, they called for contributions that share personal stories, and I knew right away I wanted to write about my experiences with lipreading. It’s something that has been such a big part of my life—growing up profoundly deaf meant that lipreading became my main way of connecting with people. In my piece, I talk about the challenges, the small victories, and the unique perspective that comes with constantly watching people’s lips to understand the world around me.

If you’re curious, you can check out the zine here: Ons Klyntji Zine 2025.

I’m crossing my fingers that my essay will make it into this year’s edition, but even just putting my thoughts on paper felt meaningful. Thanks to Ons Klyntji for giving space to voices and stories that don’t always get heard.
