I’ve just submitted my abstract for the Netflix South Africa Call for Abstracts.
Titled A Forgotten Audience: Responses of d/Deaf Audiences to Films Depicting d/Deafness, my research explores how d/Deaf characters are portrayed onscreen — and how filmmakers can do better. Through qualitative research and audience surveys, I examined the ways d/Deafness is often misrepresented and how more authentic, respectful portrayals can be achieved.
This is a topic close to my heart, and I’m excited about the possibility of contributing to a more inclusive future in South African film and television.
