Oregon ArtsWatch | Starting Over In Oregon

When I first heard that Oregon ArtsWatch wanted to interview me about my journey to Oregon, I was excited, but also a little nervous. Moving across the world, starting over in a new country, and trying to build a life and career from scratch is a deeply personal experience. Sharing that story with a journalist requires trust.

From the moment I met Ester Barkai, I knew I was in good hands.

Ester approached our conversation with a gentleness and kindness that immediately put me at ease. Rather than simply asking questions and collecting facts, she listened. Really listened. There was a sincerity in her approach that made me feel seen, not just as a filmmaker or writer, but as a person navigating a major life transition.

What impressed me most was how thoughtful she was throughout the interview process. She gave me space to tell my story in my own words and never rushed the conversation. Her questions were insightful, compassionate, and carefully considered. It was clear that she genuinely cared about understanding my experiences rather than simply writing another article.

The resulting article beautifully captured my journey from South Africa to Oregon, my passion for filmmaking, and the challenges and opportunities that come with starting over in a new country.

The interview also reminded me of something important: journalism at its best is about connection. It is about creating a space where people can share their stories honestly and authentically. Ester embodies that philosophy. Her work reflects a deep respect for the people she interviews, and that respect shines through in every interaction.

Thank you, Ester, for your kindness, your professionalism, and your generosity. It was a privilege to share my story with you. Oregon is still new to me, but meeting people like you reminds me why this new chapter is worth embracing.

If you haven’t read the article yet, I encourage you to do so. It tells the story of my journey to Oregon, but it also reflects the care and compassion of the remarkable woman who wrote it. Ester Barkai is not only an excellent journalist—she is an extraordinary human being.
